Lesotho pass guide
Mountain passes in Lesotho.
The only country entirely above 1,000 metres, Lesotho carries both the highest paved road in southern Africa and the iconic gravel ascent of Sani Pass.
Lesotho is the only country entirely above 1,000 m, so altitude is part of the geography rather than a destination. Tlaeeng Pass represents the high paved interior, while Sani Pass is the better-known border climb from South Africa into the Maloti and Drakensberg mountains.
The planning questions are surface, vehicle choice, weather, and border logistics. Sani in particular has historically required a 4×4 from the South African side — check current road status before committing.
The highest summits below: Tlaeeng Pass (3,251 m), Sani Pass (2,876 m). Each card opens a full profile with elevation, surface, season, gradient, nearby passes, and route notes.
Compare summit height alongside road character — a long paved through-road fits a different kind of day than a short, steep dead-end climb. Check season and surface before committing, then use the nearby-pass links to chain a longer route together.
