Motorcycle guide
Best motorcycle passes in the Alps
A rider-focused guide to Alpine passes with strong scenery, good linking routes, and memorable road character for motorcycles.
The best motorcycle passes in the Alps are not always the steepest or highest. What matters is rhythm: sight lines, surface, corners that flow, viewpoints that are easy to stop at, and nearby roads that let you build a full day instead of riding one famous summit and turning around.
For many riders, Stelvio Pass is the badge. The switchbacks are tight and often busy, so it is not the fastest or smoothest ride, but it is still a rite of passage. Pair it with Passo Gavia or Timmelsjoch to make the day feel like a route rather than a photo stop.
Austria's Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is a more polished motorcycle experience. It is a designed scenic road with viewpoints, services, and a clear sense of arrival. The toll is part of the planning, but so is the reliability of the experience once the road is open.
Switzerland is excellent for smooth linked days. Furka Pass, Grimsel Pass, and Susten Pass form a classic triangle of sweeping roads, stone walls, reservoirs, glaciers, and high valley views. The roads are generally more predictable than the narrowest Italian climbs.
In France, Col du Galibier and Col de l'Iseran are big Alpine crossings with strong touring value. They work best when folded into longer valley-to-valley days rather than treated as isolated climbs.
The Dolomites add density. Passo Pordoi and Passo Sella are close to Gardena and Campolongo, which makes the Sella Ronda a natural motorcycle loop. It is scenic, compact, and easy to extend when conditions are good.
