The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is not a pass that happens to be famous; it is a road built to be famous. Opened in 1935 as a public works project, it climbs to 2,504 metres at Hochtor and offers a short detour to Edelweißspitze at 2,571, with head-on views of the Grossglockner (3,798 m), Austria's tallest peak.

History

The road was designed in the late 1920s and built in five years by 4,000 workers, a large-scale employment programme during the Depression. The 36 hairpins, the generous lay-bys, and the stone retaining walls are all intentional, built to look monumental from the air. It has functioned as a toll road since opening; cyclists pay a reduced fare, or nothing at all in current practice.

Riding it

The north side from Bruck climbs 32 km to Fuscher Törl and then to Hochtor: smooth, wide-radius switchbacks designed for 1930s touring cars, now luxurious for bikes. The south side from Heiligenblut is shorter and steeper. Make the detour to Edelweißspitze for one of the best 360° views in the Eastern Alps.

Along the way

  • Edelweißspitze panoramic tower — A short detour to 2,571 m and a stone observation tower with an unobstructed 360° view of over thirty Alpine peaks.
  • Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe — The main visitor centre at the end of the Gletscherstraße spur road, with a terrace looking directly onto the Pasterze Glacier and the Grossglockner summit.
  • Alpine Nature Museum — A free exhibition at the Hochtor summit tunnel entrance documenting the geology, flora, and fauna of the Hohe Tauern national park.
  • Fuscher Törl viewpoint — A saddle at 2,428 m on the north side where the road opens up to the first full view of the Grossglockner, one of the most photographed spots on the route.
  • Timmelsjoch — The companion Austrian high crossing to the west, a natural pairing on a longer tour.
  • Grossglockner Panoramic Tour — The out-and-back tour from Bruck, with the Edelweißspitze and glacier detours.
