Col du Soulor is the quieter twin of Col d'Aubisque, linked to its more famous neighbour by the balcony traverse across the Cirque du Litor. For many riders Soulor is the better of the two: less crowded, softer gradients, and a summit pasture that feels like a high-country crossroads rather than a monument.

History

Soulor has been used as a Tour de France climb less often than Aubisque, usually as the eastern approach to it via the balcony. That shortage of coverage is why it has kept its character — few race markings on the road, no painted bike sculptures, just a working shepherd pass with a small café at the saddle. The high pasture on the summit has been common grazing land for Val d'Azun herdsmen since well before the road existed, and transhumance is still the seasonal rhythm here.

Riding it

From Argelès-Gazost the road climbs 22 km through the Val d'Azun, passing Arrens-Marsous and opening into high meadow on the final ramps. The gradient averages around 7% and the hardest sections are in the last 4 km, where the road stiffens through the bergerie country below the summit.

From here you have a choice. Drop northwest on the balcony road toward Aubisque, or stay east and descend into the Lavedan valley. Either direction is worth it, and many riders treat Soulor as the hinge of a figure-of-eight day in the central Pyrenees.

Along the way

  • Arrens-Marsous — The stone village in the Val d'Azun where the climb properly begins, a good café stop on the way up.
  • Val d'Azun — The broad pastoral valley below the south side, griffon vulture country and one of the few places in France where Occitan is still spoken in the fields.
  • The traverse to Aubisque — Four kilometres of balcony corniche hung over the Cirque du Litor, a ride in its own right.
  • Col d'Aubisque — Soulor's louder sibling, reached by the balcony road.
  • Pyrenees Grand Tour — Soulor sits at the hinge of the classic multi-day route.
